Crash Troubleshooting for Windows update KB5121003

Last Updated: 2026-08-17

We’re aware of a crash that has been impacting some players since the most recent Windows update (KB5121003). This is a crash related to the file inpoutx64.sys, which changed with the Windows update.

We’re working towards a long-term fix that we hope to deploy ASAP, but in the meantime, as you may have seen on Reddit and other places, there is a work-around solution that will safely remove the file in question and allow you to play the game without issue. To do so, you’ll need to follow these instructions:

Step 1 | Stop and delete the service

  • Open the Start menu in Windows and type ‘cmd’ to find the Command Prompt

  • Right-click on the Command Prompt and select ‘Run as Administrator’, this will open the Command Prompt window

  • In the Command Prompt window type ‘sc stop inpoutx64’ and press Enter

  • Then type ‘sc delete inpoutx64’ and press Enter

  • You can now close the Command Prompt window

Step 2 | Delete the system file

  • Open File Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\

  • Locate the file inpoutx64.sys and delete the file

    • If Windows says the file is open, you’ll need to repeat step 1

  • You can then close Windows Explorer

Step 3 | Clean your registry (this is an optional step)

  • From your Windows desktop, press the Window Key + R, type ‘regedit’ and then press Enter

  • Navigate to the entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\inpoutx64

  • Right-click on this entry and delete the inpoutx64 registry key folder

  • Close the window then restart your computer to finish the process

This should resolve the issue and allow you to keep playing the game without crashing.
